Grease a 13 x 9 x 1-inch baking pan. Cream butter and sugar until well blended. Add dates and nuts. Mix baking soda with water and pour over nut/date mixture. Add eggs. Stir in the flour and salt, beating until smooth. Add the rum and blend well. Pour into prepared pan and bake for 1 to 1 1/4 hours. Test to make sure cake is done.
